Sleep disorders can be caused by different factors. Some of the most common ones are modern technology and stress. Stress actually stimulates the secretion of cortisol.

When the stress hormone is excreted in excessive amounts, it will cause discomfort, sickness and sleep disorders. In fact, the technological devices emit light which can block the production of melatonin. Thus, if you have an unhealthy sleeping pattern, it will be very difficult to concentrate, you will be tired and you will not have an appetite.

Scientists claim that there is a connection between health problems and sleep disorders. The heart is the one organ that suffers the most if your sleeping is less than 5 hours every night.

The best research for this problem was conducted by Charles Czeisler who is a professor at Harvard University and his team between 2004 and 2014.

They wanted to determine how many hours should every age group sleeps. They also wanted to see how can insufficient sleeping affect the health.

This is what they discovered:

  • Newborn (0-3 months)- 14-17 hours
  • Babies (4-11 months)- 12-15 hours
  • Children (1-2 years)- 11-14 hours
  • Preschool (3-5 years)- 10-13 hours
  • School Age (6-13 years)- 9-11 hours
  • Teens (14-17 years)- 8-10 hours
  • Youth (18-25 years)- 7-9 hours
  • Adults (26-64 years)- 7-9 hours
  • Seniors (over 65 years)- 7-8 hours
